Lot 1333 1847, 5¢ red brown (1), horizontal pair, early impression, large to huge margins except clear at bottom right, tied by two strikes of red circular grid on 1847 folded cover to New York City, matching "Chicago Ill. Oct 3" c.d.s. and cogged "10" rate marker; vertical file fold at center, a Very Fine double weight use.

Peter Hayden (1806-1888) & Thomas Hayden ran a wholesale hardware business at 219 Pearl Street in NYC (1847 Doggett’s). They specialized in hardware for blacksmiths and carriage makers, including saddlery and harness trimmings. In addition to running the New York merchant branch, Peter established extensive manufacturing facilities, heavily utilizing prison labor contracts in Ohio, New Jersey, and California to massively scale production at a low cost.
Their product lines included
Saddlery & Harness Hardware: Buckles, rings, bits, and metallic mountings for horse tack.
Coach Hardware & Materials: Springs, axles, malleable iron castings, and bands.
Carriage Linings: Fine upholstery cloths, laces, oilcloths, and patent leather to finish carriage interiors.
