Figure 5. An attractive example of early Midwestern use of the 1847 issue is this Chicago, ILL. Sep 28 [1847] red CDS on folded letter bearing a sheet margin pair of 5c orange brown (#1b), pos 69 (dot in S) and 70L, gorgeous color and impression, tied by red grids with matching cogged-circle 10 to the left. the first supply of the 1847 issue was shipped to Chicago July 30, 1847 and was received August 5. One of Ashbrook’s notes on the face of this cover says it is the earliest Chicago use known to him. Although covers of Sept 3, 8, 12 & 27 are now known, this remains the earliest known multiple use from Chicago.

P & T Hayden ran a Hardware store at 215 Pearl (in 1847) and 219 Pearl (in 1848). Thomas Hayden is also listed at the same address but there is no P. Hayden listed in Doggett’s NYC directory. There is a Patrick Hayden is listed in the 1850 Brooklyn city directory. The address change verifies the 1847 use.
