Nelson D. Elwood came to Will County in 1837, and settled at Lockport, where he obtained employment in the engineer department of the Illinois & Michigan Canal. In 1843, he was elected County Clerk, and held the office six years. He was one of the original directors of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, and for five years Secretary to the Board. He built the Joliet & Northern Indiana Railroad, and was its President until it was sold to the Michigan Central Railroad. He was Mayor of Joliet during the years 1855 and 1856, and an Alderman from 1857 until his death. He died February 24, 1861,
