1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott No. 1). Margins to cutting, tied by red grid, matching "Macon Ga. 5 Jun. 25" c.d.s. on folded letter (first page missing) to Augusta, manuscript "Mail" at lower left, Fine and scarce.

After close examination, it appears that Bennett misread the date and Alexander got it right. The “sides” of the U are bleed-through from the letter ink.
Letter sent in care of T. S. Hankinson. Thomas Speights Hankinson (c.1825-1903) was a well-known pharmacist in charge of the Retail Drug and Prescription Department on Broad Street in downtown Augusta.
Letter to Elizabeth Morris (Selleck) Woolhopter (1827-1903). On January 11, 1847, she married Philip David Woolhopter in Richmond County Georgia, which encompasses Augusta.
The 4th line from the bottom reads “Your aff. husband, P.D.W.” The letter was written by Philip David Woolhopter, Jr. (1808-1882), a merchant and civil servant in Georgia.
