Description: Cover franked by an 1847 Issue 10 cents stamp for the rate (over 300 miles) from Augusta to New York. The 6-months 1848 Retaliatory Period with Great Britain was in effect, so the Mobile post office charged an additional 24 cents retaliatory packet postage (per the manuscript magenta "24") to charge box 298, for a total of 34 cents. The letter was carried by the Cunard steamer "Caledonia," leaving NY on July 19 and arriving in Liverpool on August 2. GB debited France 10 decimes (1 franc) per the "Colonies Art 13" marking on August 3, and the letter entered France via Boulogne on August 4. France collected 21 decimes (10 decimes due to GB plus 11 decimes for the 850 km to Bagneres). It arrived on August 7. Fewer than ten covers are known to France with 1847 10c stamps.
