"X" penstrokes, clear strike of "Key-West, Florida Apr. 8" oval datestamp on cover to East Haddam Conn., stamps with small faults incl. light creases, some slight cover soiling not mentioned on accompanying certificate, Fine appearance, a scarce 1847 usage from Key West, only five covers are listed in the Alexander census, with 1985 P.F. certificate

Horizontal pair, full to large margins except touched at upper right, matching pen cancel, on white envelope to East Haddam, Ct. with clear "Key-West Florida Apl. 3" oval in light red, struck at far left; cover with a few toned spots, faint crease left stamp, Fine and rare. Estimate $3,000-4,000

Alexander listed as 4/3/xx but looks more like 4/8/xx (see scan). The two heavier ink dots on the left give the appearance of a 3 but the bottom loop extends too high and seems to continue to the center.

It Is A Genuine Usage
Envelope posted at Key West prepaid 10 cents with 2 x Scott 1. Carried on route operated by Mordecai, Goudin & Co. under Foreign Mails Act of 1845, from Charleston via Savannah and Key West to Havana. Cover picked up en route to Havana and landed at Charleston to be transferred to Spofford, Tileston & Co's steamboat running Route 3197 to New York
Schuyler J. Rumsey Inc. sale 57 lot 4066 lists this cover as an 1849 use.
Cover carried by the New York & Charleston Steam Ship Line "Southerner". realized 3750
Robert G. Kaufmann sale 72 lot 212 realized 1400
G. E. & W. H. Goodspeed was a prominent 19th-century mercantile and shipbuilding partnership based in East Haddam, Connecticut. The company was operated by two brothers, George Edward Goodspeed (1813-1863) and William Henry Goodspeed (1814-1882). Around 1850, the firm functioned primarily as a highly successful general store, operating under the name G.E. & W.H. Goodspeed, dealing in dry goods, groceries, hardware, crockery, paints, and glass.
John Lord Parker (1823-1891) was a clerk in Goodspeed’s store in 1949. Around 1853, he moved down the river slightly to the neighboring town of Essex, Connecticut, where he became highly active in civic life. He served as Town Clerk of Essex from 1858 to 1860. In April 1860, he won the general election to become the Judge of Probate for the District of Essex.
John never married so the letter is addressed to “Mr. John L. Parker”.
