Horizontal strip of three with huge right sheet margin, large margins to just touched at bottom, fourth stamp with large margins, the strip is tied by ms. cross-strokes, the single by red "Washington D.C. 5cts Mar. 25" circular datestamp on folded cover (with two backflaps still attached) to San Francisco, file crease thru righthand stamp in strip
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWELVE RECORDED COVERS WITH THE 40-CENT TRANSCONTINENTAL RATE PREPAID BY THE 1847 ISSUE -- ONLY EIGHT OF THESE COVERS HAVE A MULTIPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 STAMP.
The 1847 cover census by Thomas J. Alexander records thirteen 1847 covers with the 40c transcontinental rate, including one with a Philatelic Foundation certificate stating that the 10c stamps did not originate. Of the remaining twelve covers, only four have 10c 1847 singles and eight have multiples (including the 80c franking, ex Kapiloff). We are grateful to Mr. Alexander for this information.

AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, THE LEFT STAMP IN THE STRIP WITH A TEAR AT TOP AND THE RIGHT STAMP WITH A VERTICAL FILE CREASE; THE COVER WITHOUT RIGHT AND BOTTOM BACK FLAPS
