John Pennington (1799-1867) was a well-known bookseller located at:
169 Chestnut Street (1847, 1848 McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory)
10 S 5th Street (1849, 1850 McElroy’s)
which dates this cover as a very likely 1847 use (assuming that the 1849 edition was prepared in late 1848 and that the sender knew the proper address.)
CDS date is actually 12/23. Eubanks dates to cover to 1847 in the article (from an internal dateline?)
