Lot 1123 1847, 5¢ orange brown (1b), four margins, lovely color from an early printing, pen cancelled, on cover with clear "Thomas's/Irving Hotel/Washington D.C." black rimless handstamp, red "Washington City D.C. Jul. 9" c.d.s. at far right, to Philadelphia, cover opened 3 sides, few tiny tears at top, still Very Fine.

Expertization: 1991 P.F. Certificate (incorrectly calling this red brown).

SINGLE WITH MS. CANCEL AND RED "WASHINGTON CITY D.C. OCT. 9" PMK. ON COVER TO PHILADELPHIA, BLACK OVAL "THOMAS'S/IRVING HOTEL/WASHINGTON, D.C." HANDSTAMP.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USE, THE COVER WITH BACKFLAP MISSING AND A SMALL REPAIR AT TOP RIGHT (enlarged image of cds)
I can see how the Washington cds was misread OCT 9 but I still feel that the date is actually JUL 9 (and so did all the previous auction houses that handled this cover). The middle letter, with it's nonuniform inking could be read as a C instead of a U but the 1st letter is clearly a J and the last one has far too much going on at the base (and not enough at the top) to be a T. It is an L.
