Note: this is a duplicate listing for the Dixon Ill cover (and it was mailed from Dixon on 3/29/50) but its story is too confusing to just be listed there. So I've left this entry intact so interested readers could understand the full history of this cover. The dates from Alexander's notes have been corrected. (MAS)
“Letters mailed to Rockford, Illinois with the 1847 5c or 10c issue are known and have been discussed in previous issues (Illinois Postal Historian, Vol 2, No. 4 Nov 1981, pp 10-14). But mail from this city with that first issue have yet to be discovered. This is in spite of the fact that the Rockford Post Office received 400 of the 5c issue and 100 of the 10c issue.
Another example of incoming mail to Rockford with the 1847 issue is a letter addressed to Robertson and Holland (Figure 1, above). This cover has a red cds faintly showing Washington MAR 29 in the left corner, with the stamp having a pen cancel. The letter was written March 27, 1850, as docketed on the back of the folded letter with the writer’s name: Cyrus Aldrich.”
Figure 1 caption reads: “Scott #1, 5c issue with pen cancel Washington DC cds. Letter written March 3, 1850 and cover dated March 29. Contents contain directions to reader on how to get Senate confirmation to Rockford’s first bankers.”
