Scott #1 1847 5c Red Brown Franklin Single On Cover ~ Washington, DC To Philadelphia (248)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single tied by double-cross manuscript "X" cancel on 1849 dated folded cover sent from Washington, DC to Philadelphia. Accompanying red December 22, Washington, DC circular date stamp at right. The 5c stamp has ample margins all around to touching frame line at bottom right. A very attractive piece of 1847 Issue postal history sent from the Nation's Capital.
The 5-cent stamp on this cover pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. This is the perfect item for the District of Columbia postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue color shades or collector of great classic U.S. covers.
