The 1847 stamp on this cover paid the U.S. inland rate from city of origin to the port of departure. Wilmington, De. is more than 300 miles from Boston so 10¢ postage was required. The wiggly black line on the cover is the English shilling mark and it means that one shilling sterling was due from the addressee to pay for both ocean carriage and British internal postage.
Lot 270 10c Black (2), Pos 11L, Large to huge margins including left sheet margin, well tied by bold grid in Dark Green matching Wilmington De. cds on Aug 13, 1847 folded letter to Liverpool England, good contents re military funeral for midshipman killed at Vera Cruz, playing ten pins in Cape may, etc, ms Via Boston Steamer, neat shilling hs and Liverpool backstamp, Extremely Fine, one of the highlights of the Hart collection and certainly one of the greatest 10c transatlantic covers in existence.
