Scott #1 1847 5c Red Brown Franklin On West Killingly, CT Folded Letter ~ Only Known! (216)
1847 5c red brown Franklin (Scott #1) single tied by orange-red grid cancel on 1851 dated folded letter sent from West Killingly to Thompson, Connecticut. Accompanying red April 14, West Killingly, Connecticut circular date stamp at left. The 5c stamp has mostly ample to large margins all around to just in at left side from scissor cut. West Killingly did not officially receive any 5c or 10c 1847 Issue stamps through the period of the stamps' use. This is the only known 1847 Issue usage from West Killingly sent less than 3 months before the issue was demonetized! A very nice and unique piece of 1847 Issue Connecticut state postal history.
The 5-cent stamp on this cover pays the rate for a letter weighing 1/2-ounce or less sent under 300-miles. The letter itself is datelined at "West Killingly" adding nicely to this unique West Killingly, Connecticut usage. This is the perfect item for the Connecticut state postal history enthusiast, student of 1847 Issue stamps or collector of great classic U.S. covers.
