1847, 5¢ red brown (No. 1), ample to large margins, fine impression, well tied by red square grid of New York, on ca. 1850 white envelope with clear "Norfolk Ct. Jul. 7" c.d.s. in black, to Newark, N.J., Very Fine. ¨Estimate $750-1,000.
A VERY RARE EXAMPLE OF A STAMP CANCELLED EN ROUTE.
1847 issue stamps left uncancelled are known, but those caught en route or upon receipt are difficult to prove, but the red square grid is unique to New York City, thus a rare documented example.

AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE
Letter to Ellen Ryerson Mills (1826-1851), wife of Robbins Battell (1819-1896) of Norfolk, Conn. They married Aug 1849 and had a daughter, Ellen Mills Battell (1851-1939), born in Norfolk, Conn.
Robbins was an. amateur conductor and composer, farmer, horse breeder, authority on bells, philanthropist, 1861 delegate to the Peace Congress in Washington, colonel of the Litchfield County Militia, president of the Norfolk Savings Bank, trustee of the Connecticut Hospital for the Insane at Middletown, member of the American Board for Foreign Missions, and president of the Connecticut Historical Society.
Therefore, this letter was posted prior to 1850.
