Post Demonetization use of 5c Orange Brown largely torn away by postmaster for redemption in cash credit toward 21c rate by American Packet via England, New Haven postmark, matching "Paid" handstamp and "21" rate, red September 20 New York transit backstamp, "Paid Part" handstamp and sent via Bremen Mails.
¨Regulations stated that the demonetized 1847 issue stamps could be redeemed for cash at any Post Office until September 30, 1851. This cover is the only reported example that illustrates this redemption for cash feature. Two reported uses of the 5c 1847 to Berlin.
