James Savage (1784-1873) was a lawyer, historian, literary magazine editor, founder of the Provident Institute for Savings (the first Savings Bank in Boston), eventually bercomming its president, State Senator, member of the Boston Common council, Alderman, overseer of Harvard University, and creator of A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, published in four volumes in 1860-64.
