Large margins to clear incl. significant portion of adjoining stamp at top, extraordinary pitch-black shade, tied by blue-black "Paid" and pointing hand handstamp, matching "5" rate handstamp and indistinct "Hartford Ct. Aug. 21" circular datestamp on 1850 folded letter to Norwich Conn., vertical file fold does not affect stamp, Very Fine, the Black Brown is very scarce, another rarity factor is the Hartford Pointing Hand tying the stamp, notation on back indicates ex Knapp

Aug 21" cds and matching "5" rate handstamp, Very Fine, a rare usage of this elusive fancy postmark, ex Knapp; with 2007 P.F. certificate.

AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS GENUINE, THE STAMP WITH A SMALL SURFACE SCRAPE AT BOTTOM LEFT.
Samuel C. Morgan was president of the Quinebaug Bank which was founded in 1832 and became the First National Bank in 1865.
