Letter datelined Hartford, Oct 11, 1847 but the CDS is dated OCT 12. It was written by Howe, Mathers & Co.
Geer’s 1847 Hartford City Directory lists Howe, Mathers & Co as a dealer in wholesale dry goods at 24 Asylum Street. It also lists the operators, Edmund Grant Howe (1807-1872) and Roland Mather (1809-1897). Other partners included James Timothy Pratt (1802-1887) and Junius Spencer Morgan (1813-1890. The firm was founded in 1831 as Pratt, Howe & Co and later became Howe, Mather & Co., until 1857 when Howe retired to form the banking house of Ketchum, Howe & Co. He returned in 1860 and the company was revived and continued until Howe’s death in 1872.
