Notes
Lot 118 1847, 10¢ black (Scott 2), large margins to just shaved at top, pen canceled on 1851 folded letter from Toronto, Canada to New York City red "Toronto-Canada/ Paid" circular datestamp, Feb 26 with red manuscript "4½"(pence) rate, red Lewiston N.Y. exchange office circular datestamp, Mar 2; two vertical file folds, one through stamp, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate $1,000 - 1,500
Rare use of U.S. postage to prepay a letter from Canada.
Daniel F. Kelleher sale 674 realized 700
Listed in Alexander as 2/28/51
Daniel F. Kelleher sale 682 lot 768 unsold
Daniel F. Kelleher sale 690 lot 121 realized 1500
Daniel F. Kelleher sale 693 lot 1084
H R Harmer sale 3027 lot 1039 unsold (reverse image and cropped cds)
H R Harmer sale 3031 lot 1031 unsold
Toronto CDS month is FEB but day is not readable. It seems unlikely that this cover was mailed on the 26th and did not reach Lewiston until Mar 2.
However, the CDS is double struck showing FE with faint 2 and rounded digit that appears too wide for an 8. While the doubling adds some extra lines, this does appear more like a 6 than an 8. This just shows how difficult dating some covers can be.
