Notes
An 1848 letter from Toronto Canada to New York City. The 10 cent US stamp was applied at Toronto to pay the rate from the border exchange point to New York City, while the 4 ½ and the PAID indicate the Canadian rate to the border was paid in cash. At the Lewiston NY exchange point the US postal clerk obliterated the PAID and cancelled the US stamp.
