Notes
This cover was mailed from Toronto to New York City. In this case the sender paid 4 ½ pence for Canadian postage to the border (Paid to the lines) and affixed a pair of 5c 1847 stamps to prepay US postage from the border to New York City (over 300 miles). United States stamps were sent to Canadian post offices for this purpose.
