Chronicle 53 (Current state, reconstructed by Hart)
The photograph above shows the cover restored as nearly as possible as it probably appeared prior to the removal of the stamp. The lower left hand postmark is a red "Quebec, April 6, 1853." The cover is backstamped Montreal, April 8, 1853, in red. The red "Canada" is there to show the origin of the letter. The "6" is to show the amount of postage and it is black to indicate it is an unpaid letter. When it arrived in New York, the New York Postmaster recognized the late, illegal use of the "47" stamps, and cancelled them with a curved PAID of New York.
Lot 234 5c Brown (1, two), each four margins (left stamp with large margins), tied by numerous strikes of red curved Paid on April 1853 folded cover from Canada to New York, red curved Canada and black 6, right stamp with corner crease, left stamp is a very convincing replacement in the matching of cancel and is also an Extremely Fine copy, handsome and rare cover used after demonetization.

Our cover this time is presented by Creighton Hart. It was purchased by him in the Harmer-Rooke & Company auction on Wednesday, September 22, 1965, and was described as follows:
5¢ brown, tied with triple magenta PAID on cover from Montreal to New York. Red Canada and black "6" Canadian.stamp has been removed.
The lower left hand postmark is red Quebec, April 6, 1853. The cover is backstamped Montreal, April 8, 1853, in red.
QUESTION: What stamp was missing-Canada or United States? The denomination of the missing stamp? Why the red curved "Canada"? Why the "6" and why in black?
Answers: The missing stamp is US #1 and was mailed from Quebec on 4/6 and not Montreal on 4/8.
