Lot 840 #1. 5c Brown, 2 copies, The R copy replaces one that has fallen off, the other cut into & tied by pen cancel to folded Money letter from Quebec (crowned circle Paid hs) , Feb 12, 1849 to New York, via Montreal bs with ms paid to the/lines No 94 (charged to box) LL, rated 11-1/2d (the single rate for 201-300 miles), the PAID was struck out and was probably done in NY. This is the only US marking. VF. Ex: Harrison, photo in Harrison, Arfken & Lussey, p.34.
Although defective this is a very rare rate cover. 2003 PF cert accompanies

TWO SINGLE 5¢, PEN CANCELLED, ON 1849 DATED FOLDED MONEY LETTER TO NEW YORK, RED CROWNED "PAID AT QUEBEC L.C." HANDSTAMP & RED QUEBEC PMK, WITH MS "PAID TO THE LINES NO.94".
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
They Are Genuinely Used On Cover WHICH ORIGINATED IN QUEBEC, BUT THE RIGHT STAMP DID NOT ORIGINATE ON THIS FOLDED LETTER, AND IS A REPLACEMENT FOR ANOTHER 5¢ STAMP.
