Montreal, Paid, Sp 3, 1847 Canada in red, Canadian tax 4 ½ d. as required. 10c 47 US paid the US postage and was cancelled by the New York clerk with the thin red square grid cancel. The U States Postage PAID certified the payment of the American tax (charged to NYC charge box 160) is very rare and was applied by the Post Master in Montreal who was simultaneously Post Master of the United States. This cover is illustrated in Boggs’ book, page 68.
