"41/2" rate mark, couple cover filing creases, one affecting right 5c stamp, otherwise Very Fine, Lovely Rare Canadian usage, signed Ashbrook

U.S. No.1 PAIR DOUBLY TIED TO COVER FROM MONTREAL, CANADA TO NEW YORK; Fine and Attractive 11/12 Apr. EL from "Montreal" to "New York" franked by a horizontal pair of U.S. 1847 5c Red-brown (margins all round, just touched at bottom right hand corner; filing fold through RH stamps as usual for these covers) tied by a part of the near fine red "PAID" mark matching the nearby "MONTREAL/L.C" c.d.s. with manuscript "4½[d]" showing that the Canadian postage was also prepaid. Rare example of full prepayment of postage in cash and US stamps; the 10c rate paid for the 300+ miles journey in the US. Exhibition Quality. A wonderful Classic cover. [Signed and annotated as genuine in 1948 by Ashbrook, on the reverse.]
