1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott No. 1). Large margins to clear at bottom, well tied by twice struck Prattville Ala. Jul. 19 c.d.s. in black with matching 5 at right, on 1850 folded cover to Vernon, Ala.; lettersheet with some internal reinforcement, Very Fine appearance, rare with the stamp tied by a black townmark. Estimate $1,000-1,500.
Provenance: Gibson, Sampson.
Prattville received no 1847 stamps of either denomination. Three covers (all 5¢) are recorded.
