Lot 148 10c Black (2). Horizontal Strip of Six, Positions 25-30L, Right Sheet Margin, Large Margins Almost All Around, frameline just touched in two places, one stamp with natural printing wrinkles, Each Cancelled by Vivid "Paint" Red Grid, impressions tie thru lettersheet, matching "Mobile Ala. Sep. 24" cds on folded letter from New Orleans to Howland & Aspinwall in New York City, letter refers to enclosures for forwarding to Kingston, Jamaica, file fold and wrinkles, few tiny toned spots, the lettersheet has been refolded at left and bottom to enhance its appearance The block of fourteen and strip of ten discovered by Major Cleveland H. Bandholtz in 1927 are the largest recorded off-cover multiples of the 10c 1847 stamp. Both are contained in the Hirzel collection on permanent display at the Swiss P1T Museum. Next in size is the unused block of six with original gum, now part of the Ishikawa collection. The used block of six that once highlighted the Benjamin K. Miller collection at The New York Public Library was divided into smaller units after its theft from the Library. Three unused blocks of four are recorded, and another three used blocks are known. Of the 10c 1847 strips, units larger than a pair are very scarce. A few strips of four are known on covers, generally paying the 40c transcontinental rate. Strips of five are great rarities on or off cover. A strip of six is the largest size multiple known on cover. Only two such strips on cover are recorded: the six-times 10c rate folded letter from New Orleans to New York City via Mobile, which is offered in this sale, and the cover to France with the Philadelphia Railroad straightline.
