Notes
1847, 5¢ red brown (No. 1), vertical pair, large margins on three sides, clear at bottom, attractive color and fine impression, tied by red grids, matching Mobile Ala. Jun.24 c.d.s. on 1850 folded letter headed New Orleans and addressed to Woodlands plantation near Kingston, Geo., better than usual business contents which notes,
"The Iron Steamboat Guadelquiver was this morning burnt up at the Julia St. Wharf, said to be done by the Cuban Liberators",
and mentions a Mr. McCalla from Florida who the writer had jailed for not settling a loan of $157.26: "he managed to raise $157.26 in less than an hour after occupation of his new lodgings." etc.
The letter ends, "in haste for the mail" though it is clear that this never entered the New Orleans post office; some wear along file fold near bottom, the top stamp with some bleed through of ink from address, Fine, interesting usage.
