
NAPEX
NAPEX, held the first weekend in June in McLean, Virginia outside of Washington D.C., is considered on of the top WSP shows of the year. USPCS members did very well there, as it was our annual meeting.
Dan Knowles won a Large Gold Medal and the Grand Award for “The Development of the Confederate States Postal Service from Secession to
Appomattox”. Mark Schwartz won a Large Gold and the Reserve Grand Award for “The New York Postmaster Provisional” (also the USSS Statue of Freedom Medal). Mark also won a Large Gold Medal and the Single Frame Grand for “The Postal History of Newbury and Newburyport During the Stampless Period 1755-1855”.
Other members winning Large Gold Medals were Bill Fort for “Wartime Transpacific Airmail 1939-1946” (also the American Philatelic Society Award of Excellence, 1940 – 1980); Larry Lyons for “Hussey’s Post”; Michael Laurence for “The U.S. 10c Postage Stamp of 1869” (also the USPCS Medal); Jeffrey Forster for “The United States 1869 Issue used in International Mails” (also the Postal History Society Award); Stephen Rose for “The 2c Stamp of the United States 1869 Pictorial Issue” (also the American Philatelic Society Award of Excellence, Pre 1900); Stephen Rose (again) for his SF “The U.S. Orange Special Delivery Stamp of 1893” (also the American Philatelic Congress Award); Larry Lyons (again) for his SF “New Orleans Carriers 1851-1861”(also the Virginia Philatelic Award for Excellence); and Richard Taschenberg for his SF “The 10c US Envelopes of 1870-1874”.
Gold Medals were awarded to Ken Gilbert for “United States Ten Cent Issue of 1861”; Bill Schultz for his SF “’Attached Rates’ of 1830s and 1840s” (also American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors Award of Excellence – Epilogue); Ken Lawrence for his SF “Wake Island in World War II”; and Millard Mack for his SF “Domestic Usages of the 1869 1c Franklin Stamp”.
Winning Large Vermeil Medals were James Milgram for “Unofficial Registration of Mail in the United States 1845-1855”; and Alfredo Frohlich for his SF “Prisoner of War Mail – Fort Delaware 1862-1865”.
Vermeil Medals went to Gerry Oberst for “Philatelic Portraits of Thomas Jefferson”(also the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors Creativity Award); and Ravi Vora for “WWI to Versailles Peace Treaty Role of Diplomatic & Military Mail”.
Ravi Vora won a Large Silver Medal for his SF “Bhavnagar State: Court Fees Stamps, Essays, Proofs and Documentary Usages”; and Lawrence Gregg won a Silver Bronze Medal for his SF “Happy Hour Special – Oysters and Beer”.
COLOPEX
Colopex was held the following weekend in Columbus, Ohio.
The Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal was won by Gary Hendren for “St Louis Street Car Mail 1892-1915” (also the AAPE Award of Excellence: Epilogue, and the Postal History Society Award).
A Large Gold Medal and the Reserve Grand Award was won by Hal Vogel for “Pioneer Period Expeditions to Greenland” (also the American Philatelic Congress Award).
Gold Medals were won by Ralph H. Nafziger for “Censorship on U.S. First Day Covers during the World War II Era” (also the AAPE Creativity Award); Ed Laveroni for his SF “St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway:Nikolaeus Railroad”; and Chip Gliedman for the SF “Mail Routes of Rupert’s Land, British North America”.
Winning Large Vermeil Medals were Michael Morrissey for “A Collateralized Exhibit of the Letterpress Printed Precancellations Used by the Canned Food Industry of their Revenue Stamps, 1866-1872 (also the USSS Statue of Freedom Medal, and the Columbus Philatelic Club Gold Ribbon); Gary Hendren for his SF “Twisted Caps – Twisted Mail” (also the President’s Award for Single Frame Auxiliary Marking Exhibiting Excellence and the APS Award of Excellence: post 1980); and Doug and Nancy Clark for the SF “Halfway to the Stars: San Francisco Cable Car and Streetcar Mail.”
A Silver Medal was won by John Rdzak for “An Ohio Volunteer”.

Tony Dewey won the Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal for “A Postal History of Hartford, Conn.” (also the Postal History Society Post Horn Award).
Larry Lyons won the Reserve Grand Award and Large Gold Medal for “The U.S.Independent Mails and Local Posts Journey to Oblivion.” Larry also won the Single Frame Grand and Large Gold Medal for “Honour’s City Express Post” (and the USPCS Medal).
A Large Gold Medal was won by Alfredo Frohlich for “United States of Columbia 1868-1881” (also The American Philatelic Society Pre-1900 Medal”.
Gold Medals were won by Tony Wawrukiewicz for “Operation and Innovation in the Dead Letter Office from 1860-1985” ( also the American Philatelic Research Medal); Ed Andrews for “Winterhilfswerk—The Third Reich’s Winter Relief Charity” (also The American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors Creativity Award); and Tony Dewey for his SF “The “H” Rate-Change Stamps of 1998 Depicting ‘Uncle Sam’s Hat’” (also the American Philatelic Society Post-1990 Medal).
MINNESOTA STAMP EXPO
The Minnesota Stamp Show was held on July 19-21 in Crystal, Minnesota.
Alfredo Frohlich won the Grand Award and a Large Gold Medal for “Chile, The Rouletted Issues, 1877-1899“. And Bob Hohertz won the Single Frame Grand and a Large Gold Medal with “Why There Was a 11⁄2¢ Prexie and It’s Later Solo Uses”.
Other members who won a Large Gold Medal were Hal Vogel for his SF “1838-1842 Wilkes Antarctic Expedition: Its Many (Often Unfavorable) Facets” (also the APS Award of Excellence Pre-1900); and Bob Hohertz for “The American Phototype Two-Cent Instructive Clauses 1867-1872” (also the AAPE Epilogue Award).
A Gold Medal was won by John B. Flannery III for “The Importance If the 2¢ Blackjack” (also the Collector Club of Chicago Award).
