Matt Kewriga wins the Grand Award at the Philatelic Show in May for “Danish West Indies Foreign Mail to UPU”
PHILATELIC SHOW
This WSP show was held the first weekend in May in Boxboro, Mass., outside of Boston. A Large Gold Medal and the Grand Award was won by Matt Kewriga for his “Danish West Indies Foreign Mail to UPU” (in photo, receiving the prize from Doug Clark).
Also winning Large Gold Medals were Ed Andrews for “Winterhilfswerk. The Third Reich’s Winter Relief Charity” Roger Brody for “U.S. Embossed Revenue Stamped Paper / 1755-1856” (also the APS Award of Excellence Pre-1900, and the ARA Association Award); Lawrence Huber for “The State of the U.S. Mails – 1909) (also the APS Award of Excellence 1900-1940, and the USSS Medal of Freedom); and Hal Vogel for “Pioneer Period Expeditions to Greenland” (also the APC award for best write up).
A Large Vermeil Medal was won by Doug and Nancy Clark for “Thomason Maine’s 19th Century Fancy Cancels” (also the U.S. Cancellation Club Award).
PIPEX
The next weekend in May borough us Pipex, held in Portland, Oregon. David Snow (photo, with Chief Judge Kathy Johnson) won a Large Gold Medal and the Single Frame Grand Award for “The 1850 First Issue of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia: A Study of Uses”.
Also winning Large Gold Medals were Tony Wawrukiewicz for “The Ways Postage Due Stamps Were Used 1879-1986” (also the APS Research Award); Robert Forster for Nova Scotia Colonial Postal History” (also the APS Medal of Excellence Pre-1900); John Bowman for his SF “2c Liberty Head U.S. Revenue Tax Stamps 1875-1883 (also the ARA Grand Award for Best Single Frame); and Edward Field for the SF “Use of $5 Stamps for Registry Fees on Security and Banknotes Transfers: 1933-1948”.
Gold Medals were awarded to Ralph Nafziger for “The 3-cent Perforate Wisconsin Tercentenary Issue”; Tony Wawrukiewicz for “Operation and Innovation in the Dead Letter Office from 1860-1985” and
and Jerry Johnson for “United States Third Class Mail”.
A Large Vermeil Medal was awarded to John Bowman for the SF “Alabama Tax on Seals Revenue Stamp 1866-1884” and Vermeil Medals were won by David Snow for “The 1876 Centennial Exhibition Issue of Postal Entires: A Study of Uses” (also the UPSS Best Postal Stationery Award); and Dale Forster for “”Around the World with Robert Carrington”.
ROPEX
This two day show was held in Canandaigua, NY in mid-May. Winning a Large Gold Medal was Bob Meegan with “United States Domestic Letter Rates from the Act of 1782 to October 1,1883” (also the Dusty Miller Award for the Best Postal History Exhibit by an RPA member, and the APS Medal of Excellence Pre-1900).
Gold Medals were awarded to Bill DiPaolo for “The 15c James Buchanan Stamp from the 1838 Presidential Series”; and John Flannery III for “The Importance of the 2c Black Jack”.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN STAMP SHOW
This show was held the last weekend in May in Denver and was the host of the Brett Cup for the best 20th century exhibit from 2016-2018. Still, Society members did have exhibits in the open part of the competition.
Winning Large Gold Medals were Alfredo Frohlich for “SCADTA Airmail 1929-1931” and Bill DiPaolo for “The Prexie Coils”. Winning Gold Medals were K. David Steidley for “Uses of the 1c Franklin, Series of 1902” and Mark E. Banchik for “Mexican-American War (1846-1848); How the U.S. Expanded Across the Continent” (also the Mexico-Elmhurst Philatelic Society International 2nd Award – Silver; and the AAPE Award of Excellence – Epilogue.
Gregory Scott Ward won a Large Vermeil Medal for “Use of U.S. Parcel Post Stamps 1913-1926”.
