Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE USPCS Announces Annual Meeting Plans
February 26, 2007... The U.S. Philatelic Classics Society (USPCS) announced today the program for its annual meeting, to be held in conjunction with the WESTPEX 2007 philatelic exposition, from April 27 to 29, 2007. The society will provide something for all levels of students of the classic period of U.S. postal issues. Society members will present daily seminar sessions, show approximately 500 pages of material in the exhibit frames, gather to both conduct the business of the society and to socialize, in addition to seeking to add to their collections in the dealerÕs bourse and auctions. "The annual meeting of the Society is always a chance to celebrate will colleagues and friends," said Wade E. Saadi, President of the Society. "The weekend is an opportunity for us to meet all of our goals as an organization - to promote interest and knowledge of the classic issues of the United States, to encourage philatelic research and the exchange of information, and to build and increase a sense of community among our members. This year, however, will be somewhat bittersweet, as we will be without our President, W. Wilson Hulme, who passed away suddenly in January," Saadi continued. WESTPEX 2007 will be held at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel, 180 Old Bayshore Highway, Burlingame, CA 94010. As of February 23, 2007, the USPCS has confirmed the following plans: USPCS members are confirmed to present sessions each day as part of the program at the show. Currently planned, though times and room locations are subject to change, are: The seminars will be presented free of charge and are open to all attendees of the show, regardless of USPCS membership status, in the Anaheim Room of the SF Airport Marriott Hotel. Society Booth: Members of the USPCS will staff the Society a booth on the show floor. The society booth will serve as a meeting place where members will be able to renew acquaintances with fellow members. Additionally, membership applications will be accepted at the booth for anyone wishing to join the Society. Annual Dinner: The Society is hosting a joint dinner with the Arizona Philatelic Rangers on Friday, April 27th at the Bayside I room at the Marriott, (the show hotel) with no-host cocktails commencing at 6:30 pm. Dinner begins at 7:00 pm. Members wishing to attend the annual dinner are asked to make reservation checks for $60.50 per person to the "Postal History Foundation" and mail them to 920 N. First Ave., Tucson, AZ 85719. Tickets to the dinner will be distributed from the Classics Society table at the show. Additionally, at the annual dinner, the Society will announce the winners of the Mortimer L. Neinken Award, which is awarded for articles about U.S. classic stamps published in a given Chronicle volume; and the Susan M. McDonald Award, which is awarded for articles about U.S. classic postal history published in a given Chronicle volume. Exhibits: USPCS members will be showing a wide range of U.S. material from the classic period before 1900. Members will exhibit unique rarities, as well as in-depth studies of the various aspects of classic U.S. philately in both competitive and invited displays. In addition, the winner of the Grand Prix National award exhibit at Washington 2006 will be presented in the Court of Honor at WESTPEX 2007. The exhibit, by USPCS member William H. Gross: United States Classic, 1847-1869, and their 1875 Re-issues, will be displayed for the only time during 2007 in the United States at WESTPEX. Annual Meeting: Members of the society are requested to attend the annual meeting to be held on Saturday, April 28th at 12:00 Noon in the Bayside I Room of the Marriott. The program of the annual meeting will include: Annual Awards: During the annual meeting, the society will announce the winners of two of its annual awards, The Lester G. Brookman Cup, which is awarded only to a member of The U.S. Philatelic Classics Society for outstanding service to the society; and the Society's highest honor Š the Distinguished Philatelist Award. Since its inauguration in 1988, forty-two people have been invited to sign this award in recognition for "Exceptionally meritorious service to U.S. philately through published research, award-winning collections, active participation in the organization and promotion of philatelic exhibitions, and sustained administrative service to the national or international organizations which furthered United States philately." Gordon C. Morrison was the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Philatelist Award.
